Which Asheville a house belongs to decides this job almost entirely. Gilded-Age sanatorium-era cottages, the English-style rowhouses of Biltmore Village and the Arts-and-Crafts bungalows of Montford and West Asheville all carry original sash that is frequently repairable, in openings that are rarely standard sizes, with divided-light patterns and trim profiles that are a large part of why those streets look the way they do -- and in housing of that age, paint layers may be lead-bearing, which governs how the work may be done. Mid-century housing and the steep-lot contemporary construction on the slopes above are ordinary replacement projects by comparison, where frame performance rather than historic character is the question.
